In 2016, The “Center for Near East Policy Research” commissioned translations of all PA texts used in UNRWA schools and presented its findings to the US Senate Near East Subcommittee and to the US House Foreign Relations Committee and to the UN Sec’y Gen’l. The study was financed in part by a grant from the Simon Wiesenthal Center and published by the Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism information center.
Theme which pervades UNRWA texts: “Right of return by force of arms”.
Result: The US Congress commissioned an unprecedented GAO investigation of UNRWA education, since the US is the largest donor to UNRWA, which ranges between $300 and $400 million per year out of the $1.2 billion UNRWA budget. 54% of the UNRWA budget goes to education.
GAO investigation began in January 2017 and was completed in April 2017
However, the Trump Administration “classifies” the GAO investigative report on PA/UNRWA education.
As a result, the US Congress and the public do not know about it and education does not seem to be on the agenda of Trump’s new middle east plan.
