O senador americano James Risch, do estado de Idaho, presidente do subcomitê para o Oriente Médio, informou que realizou um pedido oficial, em Junho, para o GAO, o escritório de contabilidade governamental dos Estados Unidos, para investigação a respeito do envolvimento de grupos terroristas em projetos educacionais da UNRWA, a Agência das Nações Unidas de Assistência aos Refugiados da Palestina. A revelação foi feita na última terça-feira, 13 de setembro, em reunião com David Bedein, diretor do Centro para Pesquisas Políticas no Oriente Médio.

Os Estados Unidos doam 400 milhões de dólares por ano para a UNRWA, o equivalente a um terço do orçamento da agência, direcionados para cinco milhões de descendentes de árabes refugiados da guerra de 1948, que vivem dentro e ao redor de 59 campos de refugiados da entidade no Líbano, Síria, Jordânia e Israel por quase 69 anos.

O GAO respondeu, em 21 de julho, que havia recebido o pedido do senador Risch e que atuaria na questão.

O senador manteve a correspondência com o GOA confidencial até a reunião com Bedein, que voou especialmente de Israel para adiantar ao senador Risch que nenhuma mudança no sistema educacional da UNRWA ocorreu com o lançamento do novo ano escolar. O senador havia sido assegurado, pelas maiores autoridades do governo americano, que o país revisou e vetou os livros didáticos usados nas escolas da UNRWA.

Bedein, entretanto, trouxe evidências ao político de que os Estados Unidos não possuem nenhuma intenção de revisar os livros escolares utilizados pela UNRWA, nem a agência de vetar os professores atuantes em áreas controladas pela Autoridade Palestina de serem membros de organizações terroristas, mesmo que vete tais profissionais no Líbano, Jordânia e Síria.
