Under tiden som vi har forskat och rapporterat om UNRWA sedan 1987 är det igen dags att uttrycka oro angående situationen i UNRWA och den nya UNRWA-kommissionären, Phillipe Lazzarini.  Vid sin första presentation till FN: s generalförsamling den 12 oktober 2020 beskrev han att fem miljoner människor som är beroende av UNRWA   ”är desperata, med UNRWA-invånare som tvingas att äta ur soptunnor.

UNRWA består av en befolkning på fem miljoner som härstammar från den halv miljon som lämnade sina hem i kölvattnet av kriget 1948. Dessa flyktingar har sedan bott i dess angränsande eller inom 59 “tillfälliga” flyktinganläggningar i Syrien, Libanon, Jordanien, Jerusalem, Judeen, Samarien och Gaza sedan dess. Dessa motiveras av en UNRWA-vision som främjar deras rätt att återvända till byarna från 1948.

När Lazzarini tillträdde sin position i mars 2020, för bara sex månader sedan, publicerade UNRWA-webbplatsen att den förlitar sig på 902 088 707 dollar, donerat av 63 nationer, varav Sverige är 4:e största givare. (Ca. 8 miljarder kr/år)

Medan UNRWA-webbplatsen anger var dess pengar kommer ifrån, ger UNRWA inga konton för hur de spenderar nära en miljard dollar. UNRWA ber givarnationer att fördela mycket av sina bidragsmedel kontant.

Därför bör deras 63 givarländer få undersöka och ställa kravet att donerad valuta inte hamnar i kassan på Hamas,  organiserad brottslighet, handel med kvinnor, vapen, narkotika eller bilar.

Nationer runt om i världen som litar på och ger till UNRWA har rätt att få veta.

Så även de fem miljoner människor som är beroende av UNRWA:s bidrag, som nu tvingas ”äta ur soptunnor.”

David Bedein
