The WikiLeaks documents only confirmed the extent to which the US and Europe are concerned about the dangerous regime that has come to power in Turkey. There are already two entities in the Middle Eastthat are governed by Muslim Brotherhood parties: Hamas in Gazaand Erdogan in Ankara. We should not be surprised at the ties of friendship between the Turkish regime and Hamas, Iran and Hizbullah: These are movements of political Islam, for whom all means are legitimate to gain power and threaten others.
The Turkey of the past served as an important pro-Western anchor in the Middle East, stabilizing, responsible and constructive. It now poses a threat and a danger to most of the Arab regimes, and to Israel, as a flash point of unrest and tension. By his thuggish and megalomaniacal behavior, as well as his support for states from the axis of evil, Erdogan threatens the stability of the region. The regimes in Egyptand Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Authority and many others, are greatly troubled by the new and aggressive player who has surfaced against them. While everyone knows that Iran is an enemy, the current regime in Turkey still hides behind the halo of the previous Turkish regimes, the friends of the West.
We should understand: This is a hostile regime, which does not intend to relinquish its hold over the country.
Now comes the latest statement by Erdogan in Beirut, who said that in case of a new war between Israel and Hamas or Hizbullah, “Turkey will not sit by quietly,” and makes the threat tangible. From now on, Turkey, according to its admission, is a potential military enemy of Israel, and may yet take up arms against us.
There is no choice, the time has come to change the world’s policy towards the Turkish regime. The existing situation, in which Erdogan is increasingly joining forces with the global axis of evil, stirs up the Middle East and yet pays no price-must end.
The US Congress must not approve any more deals for the sale of advanced arms to Turkey-for example, the F-35 stealth fighters that Ankara seeks-since the secrets of these planes are liable to be turned over to the Iranians or used against Israel. Anyone who wishes to maintain Israel’s military advantage, must not approve the transfer of any more advanced arms to Turkey. The Turkish army should now be counted amongIsrael’s enemies, not its friends.
It is also impossible for Turkey to remain a member of NATO, since it engages in military cooperation with Iran and China, both of whom are considered enemies of NATO. According to the documents leaked to WikiLeaks, Turkey transferred military and nuclear materials to Iran through its territory, and it has published the fact that joint aerial maneuvers with the Chinese were held over its soil. How can such a country, which could transfer NATO’s secrets to its enemies, be trusted? Turkey in NATO is like Iran in NATO.
The Turkish foreign minister, who was defined by the Americans as very dangerous, feigns innocence in Washington, of course, but it should be made clear to him and his master that from now on, Congress will closely supervise Turkey. If it returns to play a responsible role in the Middle East, the USwill continue to assist it. But if it continues to sow threats and aggression, it will consider imposing sanctions on it, as on Syria.
For what is the difference between the two, when they both aid terror? But while Bashar Assad’s regime is secular and responsible to a certain degree (Assad asked Erdogan to calm down when the latter was running amuck after the flotilla affair), the current Turkish regime is a classic Muslim Brotherhood regime.
Erdogan himself spares no opportunity to engage in wild indictment against Israel. Europe has already changed its attitude towards his regime, and he has no chance today of being accepted into the European Union. The time has come for the US Congress to also treat the mounting Turkish threat with full severity.
