Amman, Dec. 5 (Petra) – The cost of hosting Syrian refugees that Jordan’s economy has been bearing since the beginning of 2013 has reached $ 2.1 billion, State Minister of Media Affairs and Government Spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said on Thursday.

Momani explained that the amount Jordan received from donors in the past one year did not even exceed $ 800 million.

In a statement to Petra, Momani called upon all the countries and donors to assist the Kingdom to enable it to fulfill its duties and obligations towards the refugees who are exerting a heavy pressure on its infrastructure, especially when it comes to water and energy consumption and demand for housing.

“These are factors that have been negatively impacting the life of the Kingdom’s own citizens,” the minister added.

Momani noted that Al-Azraq camp for Syrian refugees is in its final stages and will be soon completed.

As for the the Zaatari camp, he added that it has not yet been occupied to its full capacity and can accommodate a large number of additional Syrian refugees, particularly since the number of refugees has relatively decreased in the past few months.

A total of 600,000 Syrian refugees have arrived in the Kingdom since the outbreak of the Syrian crisis three years ago, 112,000 of whom are in the Al- Zaatari camp.
