As wait for Quartet statement to renew talks Official PLO news agency terms
elevator in Jewish Quarter for handicapped access to Western Wall serious

challenge to the feelings of Muslims

The Arabic section of the official PLO news agency, WAFA, featured a photo

spread on 19/08/2010 Time: 15:02 of what appears to be preparations for

construction of the elevator in the Jewish Quarter for handicapped access to

Western Wall.

The project is taking place across the plaza from the Western Wall – far
away from the Temple Mount and the Al Aqsa Mosque.

Rather than claim that the construction somehow physically endangers the Al
Aqsa Mosque, the official PLO news agency simply argues in its caption that

the elevator is ” a serious challenge to the feelings of Muslims in

Ramadan…”

The claim by the official PLO news agency that there is a problem with
building an elevator for handicapped access from the Jewish Quarter because

it is ” a serious challenge to the feelings of Muslims in Ramadan” just as

the Quartet is slated to issue a statement that is to lead to the renewal of

direct negotiations serves as a clear warning to Israel that it would be

nothing less than foolhardy for Israel to agree to any arrangements that

might provide a Palestinian entity a say as to what transpires inside

Jerusalem.
