Loud and clear

When the weather is about to turn nasty the early indications of impending storms are usually loud and clear.

At that stage, we can either ignore the rumbling of approaching thunder in the hope that it will blow over or we can take precautionary steps to avoid inevitable collateral damage and disruption.

Like the weather, cyclical events which negatively impact Jews are an ever-present reality and one which we should have by now learnt to anticipate and deal with.

Unfortunately, this is not the case and time after time we are faced with a repeat of past failures.

A roundup of current developments graphically illustrates how far too many are still reluctant to take preventative measures in time. In fact, instead of taking precautionary steps to avoid disaster, they prefer to procrastinate, hallucinate and vacillate.

Where the signs are murky there is perhaps an excuse for caution and hesitancy. However, when developments are loud and clear there is certainly no excuse for not taking decisive action.

Take the current crisis over Ukraine and Russia as a classic example.

According to estimates which vary considerably, there could be up to 400,000 Jews in the Ukraine. This number amazingly includes thousands of Ukrainians with Israeli citizenship and other Israelis who for one reason or another are living and doing business there. Given the sordid history of hate towards Jews in that country, it never ceases to amaze me that we are still faced with up to half a million residing in that country.

The burning question which currently confronts residents is whether to pack up and flee in the face of a possible Russian attack or stay and fight to the death against possible invaders. In the natural course of events, one would expect citizens to do their patriotic duty and defend their motherland. That is what the Jewish President is doing although apparently, some politicians have already departed for safer parts. In past generations, Jews when faced with the devil or the deep blue sea had very few if any sanctuaries to escape to and it was often a toss-up whether to trek into the unknown or stay and face the inevitable backlash by hate-filled locals.

Today of course Israel offers a haven and unlike in previous times when there was no Jewish State, even provides the means to travel from Ukraine to Israel. One would have thought that Ukrainian Jews might be moving en mass but this is not the case. Anyone who has even the slightest idea of past events must surely realize that whatever the outcome of this present crisis the fallout as far as Jews are concerned will not be of a benign nature.

Whether the Russians invade and take over the country and install pro-Russian politicians or the situation subsides temporarily you can guarantee that the Jews will be blamed and targeted. Having a President who happens to be Jewish will merely add fuel to the hate fire when it all collapses. No amount of patriotic fervour on the part of Jews or exhortations of love for Ukraine by the Jewish leadership, lay and religious, will help. Likewise, guarantees that Rabbi Nachman of Uman and other holy men buried in Ukraine will protect those remaining are promises which are worthless. These same sorts of illusions doomed pre-war Jews in Poland and Eastern Europe to an inevitable fatal end.

It is understandable that there is great hesitancy as to which course of action to take but when the omens are loud and clear and one realizes that the soil of the Ukraine is soaked in Jewish blood then the decision should be a “no brainer.”

We have just been graced with a visit by the German Foreign Minister who as expected voiced her country’s eternal solidarity with Israel. Of course, at least in public, nobody challenged Germany’s continued propping up of Holocaust denier Abbas and the corrupt PA. German NGO’s together with others, fund organizations which delegitimize Israel and work to spread lies in UN bodies.

At the press conference, the Foreign Minister declared that the nuclear talks with Iran were “entering the final phase.” According to her, the resultant agreement would “make the region safer.” Of course, we are expected to swallow this tripe even though Iran’s intentions are loud and clear. Germany’s past record on “final phases” makes me highly suspicious of the inevitable outcome. Knowing that Biden has waived sanctions on Iran’s “civil nuclear program” and the dollars are starting to flow one can easily discern which way the appeasement wind is blowing.

The UK Defence Minister is in hot water because he said that he “detected a whiff of Munich in the air” over Ukraine and Russia. Someone should tell him and his Government that as far as Iran is concerned “there is a stench of Munich” permeating the Capitals of the USA, UK and the EU. Those of us not living in a hallucinatory world can certainly detect more than a whiff.

Talking about bad smells reminds me of a statement issued by the British Foreign Office recently. Following the publication of the notorious diatribe against Israel issued by Amnesty International, these remarks were forthcoming from a section of the UK Government which has never shown much “love” for Israel.

“We do not agree with the terminology (i.e. apartheid state) but Israel needs to respect international law and uphold values of equality for all.”

In classic “nudge, nudge, wink, wink” diplomacy this disgusting piece of unsolicited sanctimonious advice is classic hypocrisy on a grand scale.

Recently Israel eliminated three Fatah affiliated terrorists who had carried out armed attacks against Israelis and were planning more murderous acts. PA President for life and darling of the international community, Abbas, bitterly condemned the demise of the terrorists and vowed dire consequences to follow. His close colleague and touted possible successor, Hussein Al-Sheikh, called Israel an enemy of the Palestinian people.

Instead of condemning and preventing terror these misnamed doves of peace are actively encouraging and promoting it.

It is a sorry spectacle to witness how the international community and leftist groupies continue to prostrate themselves at the feet of those promoting murder of Israelis. As increasing numbers consciously adopt Israel delegitimization rhetoric the majority of right-thinking Israelis are finally getting the message loud and clear.

That is what really upsets those who expect us to resume our usual role as the world’s convenient scapegoats.

It is no longer an option most of us are prepared to contemplate.

Amnesty International Tries to Put Israel on Trial

Amnesty International is the latest anti-Israel organization to make headlines by using the word “apartheid.” But lots of people dislike Israel and make false claims about it. What makes this claim notable? Why has it started to catch on?

The Amnesty International false news report

Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation.

On February first, Amnesty International (AI) published an anonymously authored report falsely accusing Israel of being an apartheid state. The 280 page document entitled,Israel’s Apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime against Humanity, is an appalling, even ludicrous, assault on the only democracy in the Middle East. The governments of Canada, the US, the UK and many others, have unequivocally condemned it.

Even some high ranking Israeli Arab activists and lawmakers, rejected it, including Mansour Abbas, head of the United Arab List who represents the party in the Knesset. The title itself is an Antisemitic lie that is so far fetched it does not deserve to be debated.

In fact it is the PA, not Israel, which is the apartheid regime, proclaimed Professor Eugene Kontorovich, an expert in International Law at George Mason University. “It is impossible for Jews to live under PA jurisdiction, and it actively campaigns for the expulsion of all Jews from the West Bank.”

Once a highly respected human rights organization, under the guise of human rights, this report is being used as a vehicle to promote a propaganda war to delegitimize the State of Israel. With this “report,” Amnesty International reveals what it has become – instead of a human rights advocate, contributing to the solution, it has become part of the problem, promoting hatred and bigotry.

Rather than being an indictment of Israel, the document becomes an indictment of AI. It will do nothing to alleviate Palestine suffering. It will only incite hatred and violence.

This should not come as a surprise. Long before their current campaign of smearing Israel, the key figures at AI had reputations as obsessive defamers of Israel.

Agnes Callamard is the Secretary-General of AI. She spread lies about Israel, such as claiming that former PA head, Yassar Arafat, was assassinated by Israel. In 2018, when Hamas directed its people to tear down the border between Israel and Gaza and violently “implement the right of return and to conquer Jerusalem,” Callamard defended them. She also condemned Israel’s right to protect itself from violent attacks.

Philip Luther, research and advocacy director at AI, promotes the right of return of the Palestine refugees to solve the Arab Israel conflict which would eliminate the Jewish state. When asked about AI’s disproportionate focus on Israel, he uses the old Antisemitic trope of Jewish power. “Israel managed to shut down scrutiny using the power of its relationships…..” he claims.

Saleh Hijazi, Deputy Regional Director of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). A long time anti-Israel activist who wants the elimination of Israel. He has posted photos praising notorious Palestinian terrorists’ on his Facebook page.

There have been calls for and a petition to the Government of Canada to withdraw the charitable status of AI which has violated the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism by making baseless allegations of violations against Palestine by Israel. We call on the Government of Canada to publicly and unequivocally denounce the lies and antisemitism in this report.

Erasing the Mufti from Yad Vashem sets a dangerous precedent

To marginalise the wartime Grand Mufti’s contribution to the Nazi enterprise sets a dangerous precedent, and to erase him from Yad Vashem minimises the history of how Nazi ideology was imported into the Arab world, where it still partly festers today. Writing in JNS News, Ellie Cohanim and Maya Carlin wade into the controversy over Yad Vashem’s refusal to re-instate a photo of the Mufti.

Throughout Hitler’s rise to power, the mufti remained a leading figure in the Arab world, and his vehement anti-Semitism and contribution to organized war crimes against Jews have been and will remain significant facts in Holocaust history.

The mufti is best known for directly forming and training Arab refugees and Arab-Europeans in Waffen-S.S. (combat) divisions. He was tasked in 1943 by the S.S. with recruiting Bosnian Muslims in an effort to establish the “Mountain division.”

In Himmler’s Bosnian Division, author George Lepre explains the significance of the Nazis’ securing of a religious authority like al-Husseini in their expansion efforts, since local Muslim leaders prohibited Muslims from working alongside the Nazis. Due to the mufti’s commitment to the program and robust propaganda efforts, an estimated 27,000 recruits signed up.

In addition to his endeavor to recruit Arabs into Axis armies, al-Husseini wholeheartedly supported Hitler’s master plan for Jews and had personal knowledge of how Nazi concentration camps operated. In a series of photographs sold at a Jerusalem auction in 2017, the mufti is seen alongside a handful of other global leaders at the Trebbin concentration camp in 1942. This serves as proof that the mufti understood the fate of Jews in Europe and hoped to emulate that path for Jews in the Arab world.

While recruiting for the Waffen-S.S. and visiting concentration camps certainly aided Hitler’s wartime agenda, the mufti’s most profound contribution to Nazism was in the propaganda realm. He spearheaded efforts to politicize Islam through radio interviews, pamphlets and newspapers that ultimately helped facilitate the emergence of a new Islamic anti-Semitism.

In his constant broadcasts on the Arabic-language Nazi network Radio Zeesen, he manipulated texts from the Quran to attack Jews as enemies of Islam. Between April 1939 and April 1945, Radio Zeesen broadcast in Arabic every day and al-Husseini was its key clerical voice.

The radio segments were professionally broadcast daily in various Arabic dialects to amass the widest range of listeners possible. The program severed as a significant tool for the mufti to propagate this new Islamic-based anti-Semitic narrative. By providing a religious justification for Jew-hatred, he was able to secure the Muslim supporters that the Nazi Party otherwise would have struggled to acquire.

In addition to Radio Zeesen, anti-Semitic Islamic literature spread like wildfire throughout Arabic-speaking communities. The manifesto Islam and Jewry combined anti-Jewish motifs in the Quran with modern European anti-Semitic tropes in a form that can be characterized as “Islamic anti-Semitism.”

As Matthias Küntzel explains in Nazi Propaganda in the Middle East and its Repercussions in the Postwar Period, the text exaggerated and highlighted classically minimal episodes of anti-Jewish moments in the Quran to appear to be central themes in the religious text. This propaganda disseminated among Muslims helped fuel the Jew-hatred on which Hitler would eventually capitalize.

The Egyptian-based publisher of Islam and Jewry, Mohamad Ali al-Taher, was an associate of the mufti’s and has been linked to facilitating relations between the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood and German agents. Radio Zeesen and Islam and Jewry, which allegedly was written in part by the mufti, helped catalyze the rampant Jew-hatred in Egypt and fed into the Muslim Brotherhood’s vigor to annihilate the Jewish state.

In late 1945, on the anniversary of the 1917 Balfour Declaration, a wave of gruesome anti-Jewish pogroms swept Cairo. Several Jewish institutions were burned down, including the Ashkenazi synagogue in the Muski Quarter, and more than 100 Jews were wounded. By this point, the extent of the mufti’s war crimes was public knowledge. The mobs who perpetuated the pogroms chanted slogans defending him and vowed to murder every Jew if he were to be captured.

The Muslim Brotherhood’s ability to garner a massive mob to conduct such pogroms that year indicates that the Nazi ideology fueled and coordinated in part by al-Husseini had had a serious impact.

After the end of WWII, Jew-hatred remained so robust in Egypt that the country became a makeshift safe haven for Nazis. Collaborators like Johann von Leers, a senior S.S. official nicknamed “Hitler’s number one anti-Semite” for his work in Joseph Goebbels’s Propaganda Ministry sought refuge there.

In fact, the Mufti himself facilitated Leer’s entry into Egypt, where he would oversee anti-Israel propaganda as head of the Institute for the Study of Zionism. The author of dozens of books and articles published between 1932-1944, Leers was one of the most prolific anti-Semitic writers in Hitler’s Third Reich. According to recently declassified CIA documents, the work that Leers began in Germany and continued in Egypt irrefutably links to the decades of violent Arab-Israeli relations that would dominate the region for years to come.

Some scholars argue that the mufti was more concerned with achieving power or gaining a foreign ally than with exterminating Jews. Whether or not these alternative motivations played a part in his thinking is irrelevant, however. He unquestionably emerged as the leading non-European aide for the Nazis, and played a vital role in recruiting and training the S.S. soldiers whose main ambition was to secure Hitler’s reign by systematically murdering Jews.

Therefore, the marginalizing of his contributions to the Nazi wartime efforts is ludicrous and sets a dangerous precedent. Erasing him from Yad Vashem’s exhibit also minimizes the history of how Nazi ideology was imported into the Muslim and Arab world, where it festers in many corners of that world to this very day.

Ten Issues which all governments who fund UNWRA must consider

David Bedein, Director. Israel Resource News Agency at the Bedein Center For Near East Policy Research

1. UNRWA as a United Nations Agency, is obligated to teach principles of peace and reconciliation in accordance with the values of the United Nations. However, UNRWA refuses to remove texts which promote war against the Jews. For Example: An school book incorporated by UNRWA Schools in 2018 reveres a woman terrorist who murdered 35 Jews in a terror attack. In the pages that follow her picture in that text, the killer is portrayed as a role model for the children to learn from.

2. UNRWA textbooks delete any map of Israel and rename all Jewish communities in Israel with Arabic Names

3. UNRWA teaches songs and poems which promote the extermination of the Jews.

4. UNRWA allows it schools to be adorned with violent Images of Arab terrorists who have murdered Jews.

5. UNRWA allows violent youth clubs run by Hamas to operate on UNRWA school grounds.

6. UNRWA has created a curriculum for tolerance which does not include tolerance of Jews.

7. UNRWA operates in Jerusalem, the sovereign capital of Israel, yet refuses to recognize the authority of the Government or Courts of Israel.

8. UNRWA ,instead of resettling refugees in better conditions, continues to insist that their arab refugees from the 1948 war and their descendants must remain in 59 “temporary” refugee Camps where they have lived since 1949

9. UNRWA runs summer camps where the children are fully trained with live ammunition to “liberate Palestine”

10. UNRWA rallies Arabs who live in the Shimon Hatzadik/Sheikh Jarrah Neighborhood to encourage Arabs take back all neighborhoods in Jerusalem where Arabs lived before 1948.

Fighting the Libel of ‘Settler Violence’

There are many outrageous charges leveled at Israel by Palestinian Arabs and their supporters on the political left. Advanced without concern for veracity, the charges enter public awareness by way of constant repetition.

Now a new charge has emerged: “settler violence.”

Rather than being directed at all of Israel’s Jews, this one focuses on those who live in Judea & Samaria. Within this population of “settlers,” it is said, there are young men who act violently towards innocent Arabs.  This phenomenon is identified as a growing problem of serious concern.

Among those who give voice to this accusation are left-wing elements inside of Israel: officials, such as Defense Minister Benny Gantz (Blue & White) and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid), and some portion of the Israeli media. In the international community it comes – unsurprisingly – from the UN and the EU, as well as the US.  The State Department report on terrorism released in late December included the outrageous contention that this was one of the causes of Palestinian Arab violence.

We can, however, identify significant problems with the ways in which “settler violence” is researched:

○ Frequently there is a failure to confirm that alleged attacks really happened as charged, and that those doing the attacking really were Jews living in Judea & Samaria.

○ Very often there is no attempt to consider the broader context of the alleged violence.

○ International entities often rely on information from notoriously biased left-wing NGOs.

Nor is it difficult to discern the agendas at work:

□ Attempts are made to equate the severity of alleged attacks by “settlers” with attacks on Jews by Palestinian Arabs. Presumably, this redirects attention and mitigates distress about Arab attacks.

□ As well, there are attempts to use this situation to convey the impression that it might be better if Jews did not live in Judea & Samaria. This bolsters the case for that “two-state solution.” Commitment to “two states” may be what motivates the likes of Gantz and Lapid, although it is possible that they are simply demonstrating a pathetic eagerness to stay in concert with the international community.

□ Then, finally, international entities may level either implicit or overt criticism against the Israeli government and/or the IDF for failing to confront “settler violence.” This is consistent with other efforts to delegitimize Israel.

What I provide here is an over-view of the situation.  I do not presume to claim that there are no instances of settlers attacking Arabs. What I do claim is that both the severity and the frequency of such attacks are inflated.

I begin with one recent accusation that addresses the matter of context.

At the end of last year, it was reported that students of the yeshiva in Homesh, in Samaria, threw stones within the perimeter of the neighboring Arab village of Burqa.  In one news report, it was said that windows in a new house were broken.  I have seen no documentation of physical injury to the Arabs of Burqa by the students of Homesh.

I certainly do not endorse stone throwing.  But I feel the need here to consider the broader situation:  These students were grieving, having suffered the loss of one of their own, Yehuda Dimentman, in an unprovoked drive-by shooting by Arabs in mid-December.

While grieving, surely many were also very angry. How could it have been otherwise?  But there was not the remotest indication that they were planning a retaliatory murder of a local Arab.  Rather, it seems some may have thrown stones.

In a situation such as this, should we be focused on “settler violence” or on methods for preventing murderous attacks by Palestinian Arabs?

According to data released by the IDF in mid-December, in 2021, Arabs carried out 6,633 attacks in Judea & Samaria: 61 shootings, 18 stabbings, 1,022 fire bombings, 5,532 rock-throwing attacks.

This comes to 18 attacks against Jews in Judea & Samaria per day!

Compared to 2020, last year showed a 38% increase in stone-throwing incidents, a 36% increase in Molotov cocktail attacks, and twice as many stabbings.

I post about Israel regularly.  Repeatedly I have noted the praiseworthy behavior of Jews in Judea & Samaria when coping with the terrorist murder of one of their own.  They don’t seek vengeance, they want to build in the memory of the person who was cut down.

These Jews are in the main dedicated to Zionist ideals. No, they are not perfect: given the stresses they deal with, we shouldn’t be surprised that some small number might lash out in frustration on occasion.  But they should be saluted for their courage in the face of terror and their commitment to their ideals, not vilified. Yet they are being vilified.

On January 27, Jerusalem Post Editor Yaakov Katz wrote a column called ‘It is time to combat settler violence.” At first blush it appeared fairly moderate. For he made the point that it was only a small minority of “settlers” that was violent. But then I looked again.

Katz voiced distress about the lack of enforcement of law in Judea & Samaria (law concerning Jews, he meant).  In this context he cited Deputy Minister Yair Golan (Meretz), who “called the Jews who have been trying to illegally resettle the evacuated settlement of Homesh ‘subhuman,’ after the army said that some of them had vandalized nearby Palestinian property.” (Note: the charge is vandalizing property, not vicious bodily attack.)

Wrote Katz: “Golan – who later apologized – was wrong in his choice of language…On the substance, though, he was not wrong.”

I was aghast!  Golan had sent a public message to the Bedouin in the Negev when they were rioting by the thousands, subverting law and insisting on their right to illegal housing. He told them not to worry because he and others were with them.

Katz apparently didn’t mind that Golan endorsed violence on the part of the Bedouin.  He didn’t demand that Israel apply “rule of law” in the Negev.  Only in Judea & Samaria, where Jews are concerned and there are, says Katz, “violent criminals” in some of the Jewish communities.

What we see here is a stunning example of a highly politicized double standard!

David Bedein, director of the Center for Near East Policy Research, then put out an open letter to Katz, in which he posed a number of questions in order to make the point that matters are not always as they seem:

“…ISM is a well-organized anarchist group who use clever infiltration such as wearing tzitzit [ritual fringes]…flowing from their shirts to gain entry and access to Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria, while befriending pro-Arab NGOs.

“Have you ever asked anyone in the police or GSS [General Security Service] about whether some or all of the masked rioters are indeed members of The ISM or any other anarchist group?”

Bedein’s questions jogged my memory:

In the fall of 2019, Rabbis for Human Rights (RHR) went to help Arabs harvest olives near the community of Yitzhar in Samaria – as is their practice.

Rabbis for Human Rights is identified by NGO Monitor as a partner of Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel, which “promotes BDS campaigns and utilizes demonizing rhetoric accusing Israel of ‘apartheid,’ ‘collective punishment,’ and ‘war crimes’.”  On the occasion I recall, the members of RHR who were helping with the harvest claimed that a group of “Jewish settlers” charged down from Yitzhar and began attacking them. The “settlers,” they said, then set fire to the olive grove.

I subsequently learned from an impeccable source that it was the Arabs who set the grove on fire to implicate the “settlers.”  Various members of RHR individually put out information on Facebook about what had transpired.  One said that the entire olive grove had been burned down.  A subsequent message observed that they would have to return the following week to complete the harvest.  There were messages, as well, about an elderly rabbi allegedly injured by the “settlers” that did not hold up.

Many believed what the RHR had charged regarding violent “settlers.”  Only because I asked questions, and monitored the situation, did I find the holes in the story.

I have learned that on occasion there have been Jews – Jews without honor or a shred of integrity – who have confessed to having attacked Arabs for a price.  Some of them – perhaps many – are not “settlers” at all.

What I have further learned is that the EU has paid the anti-Israel NGO Breaking the Silence a very substantial sum to raise public awareness of “settler violence.”  Breaking the Silence, NGO Monitor tells us, is “active in promoting ‘war crimes’ charges against Israel…based on anonymous and unverifiable hearsay ‘testimonies’.”

We see then that there is no reason to accept charges that there is “more settler violence.”  The issue is simply being more vigorously promoted.  Several reports actually indicate a reduction in Jewish violence.  According to data made available by the Israel Police in December, reports Yisrael Medad, “there has been a 61.1% drop in so-called price-tag attacks.”

Attention must be directed towards the considerable increase in violence directed AGAINST settlers, which has been documented.

Shameful yet not unexpected

During a long and eventful history, the Jewish People have encountered myriad shameful situations.

One would imagine that these exposures to the worst acts which nations and individuals could inflict on others might have conditioned us to never be surprised again when they keep repeating in every generation.

As current events unfold in various parts of the world it is worthwhile to pause, take note and remember that we have seen it all before.

The winter Olympics now taking place in China is a classic example of history repeating itself a mere eighty-six years after the last major spectacle in Nazi Germany.

Back then political expediency, moral cowardice and plain old prejudices all contributed towards handing the Third Reich a prize and gold medal for hosting a sports event in the midst of their campaign to delegitimize Jews. By 1936 Germany’s Jews had already been deprived of citizenship and the inexorable steps towards their ultimate fatal fate were well underway. Since 1933 the rest of the international community and the Olympic movement had witnessed how the agenda of exclusion and demonization had gathered momentum. They had plenty of time to transfer the games to a more suitable country but of course, they preferred to pretend that nothing was amiss.

Trotting out the same old tired slogans as today the IOC and notably, Avery Brundage insisted that they had no desire to take into account the lack of human rights or internal policies of the host nation. Having been given a VIP tour of Germany, Brundage was convinced that there was nothing amiss. Others however were not fooled by the smokescreens of propaganda and could see through the transparent barrage of lies and disinformation.

As talk of boycotting the Berlin Olympics gained momentum the IOC revealed its true colours. As an article in the Washington Post revealed just a month or so ago: Brundage would become one of the most forceful advocates of U.S. participation in Berlin, even if that meant taking antisemitic shots at American Jews pushing for a boycott. “Certain Jews must understand that they cannot use these Games as a weapon in their boycott against the Nazis,” said Brundage, who labelled the anti-Olympic campaign a “Jewish-Communist conspiracy.”

Fast forward to the present and the Winter Olympics now taking place in China. Although this time Jews are not the target the situation is not dissimilar. In a country where human rights have a completely different meaning and where incidentally Judaism is not an officially recognized faith, competitors from all over the world will be feted while a minority group in China is incarcerated in “re-education” camps and their religious beliefs are suppressed.

Politicians and sports officials in many countries shamefully advised competitors to keep their mouths shut and not to say anything which might “upset” the hosts. Back in 1936 some foreign competitors and officials gave the Nazi salute as they marched past the dais in the stadium. Either way, remaining mute or demonstrating solidarity with the host regime was and is morally bankrupt.

Those taking part in the competitions have spent years training and preparing for this occasion. They are not the ones who should be ashamed to take part although kol hakavod to any whose conscience precluded them from joining this spectacle. Those who really should be ashamed are the IOC and member committees in all the countries sending competitors. By pretending that sport has nothing to do with political persecution of defenceless minorities and that closing one’s eyes and ears to shameful behaviour is proof that yet again the Olympic Movement has refused to learn the painful lessons of the recent past.

Our own horrendous experiences should have ensured that at least the Jewish State did not give a “hechsher” to this. Unfortunately, political correctness and an overwhelming fear not to offend and articulate uncomfortable truths triumphed over any moral conduct.

On a totally different subject but still shameful yet not unexpected is the news that the former Chief Justice of South Africa has been forced to recant his previous support of Israel. The new Orwellian version of double speak means that anyone, especially if they hold prominent positions, who challenges the lies about Israel being an “apartheid” State must be made to pay for their sin.

Who better than a former Chief Justice of South Africa can there be to expose the fallacies of the libel? That is why the blind haters, inciters and ignorant groupies, from the Government, media and NGO’s are compelled to band together to make sure that the sinner is outed, ostracized, threatened and made to repent.

The latest to jump on the apartheid bandwagon is the United Church of Canada. They are going to consider labelling Israel as an “apartheid” country and refusing to recognize it as a Jewish State. As an added bonus they will support BDS. Presumably, the next step of these historically deficient Church members will be to write the Jews completely out of the Bible. After all, if you leave out all the references to Jews in the Promised Land you can then embrace the fiction that Jesus was a Palestinian Arab martyr, the Temple never existed and Jewish sovereignty was a myth.

That’s how you rewrite history and perpetuate lies which have dire consequences further down the line.

Shameful?

Of course, it is but certainly not surprising.

What is even more shameful however is the deafening silence from Jewish leaders and decent people everywhere.

Fear of upsetting the proliferators of lies is no longer a viable option as we should have learnt from past failures.
